Sooth your tiring feet after your shopping spree in Hong Kong!
Foot massage is one of my weekly indulgence - not only that it sooth tiring feet but also stimulate circulation to get rid of toxin in the body. Everyone has different reaction, I usually sleep better after my 100-min session and also feel much lighter. (Somehow I think I walk faster too)
Foot massage went way back to 4000 years ago from China, and the treatment method was then spread to the West and Japan. The ancient Chinese developed a point stimulation method under our feet, which is more or less like acupuncture without needles.
I would definitely recommend a foot massage after long shopping and here are tips to enjoy your foot massage better:
-
If this is your first time going for a foot massage or if the massage therapist is new, order 1 session (usually 45 min to 50 min) first. Give them 15 minutes of time, if it feels good, ask for 1 more session. Usually I’d recommend at least 2 massage sessions (approx 100 min).
-
Massage therapists in tourist districts offer mild massages - to me, it feels like ”foot rubs” but if you can’t take heavy pressure, these are the ones you can go for (after all, foot massage is about comfy - don’t torture yourself. There was one time, the dude sitting beside me was moaning in pain!). For me, I usually ask for heavy pressure, in that case, the traditional ones are good.
-
Drink lots of warm water through out your massage helps flash out the toxin from your body.
-
Let them know if you have injured any parts of your legs
-
Let the massage therapist know if you don’t sleep well or your stomach doesn’t feel good so that they work the spots on your feet. I usually ask them to work on my “sleep spots” so that I can have deeper sleeps at night.
-
My 2 session massage comprises of massages from my feet all the way to my thighs - it works better especially when you wear heels all the time. But you have to let them know in advance, otherwise, they just work up to your knees.
-
Avoid too much walking after - go home / hotel, and start snoozing
-
Tip your massage therapists well, they deserve it - if I get a 2 session massage, I usually tip HK$60 - HK$80
