Baby pot rice
A common joke in Hong Kong goes like this:
Ask: What is the cruelest Hong Kong dish?
Answer: Baby-pot rice.
In Cantonese “Baby-pot” means “small pot” but it also sounds the same as “cooking a son”.
It’s probably not funny when the joke get translated into English but it doesn’t take a HongKonger to appreciate this (see below):
I have been back to the city for 4 years and recently tried the ever-famous “baby-pot rice” from this restaurant. I was really lucky to have my first baby-pot rice experience in this restaurant, turned out it’ a popular baby pot rice restaurant from my google search.
This restaurant sells 450 pots on average a day!!!
There are 10 small pot on this street counter, handle by one cook! I stood there watching him manage these pots, it looked like he was playing 10 drums at once and I love watching him remembering the ingredients in each pot, I am sure his memory was well trained making 450 pots a day!!!
Baby-pot rice is a great dish in the winter. It doesn’t just taste good but also smells great - the rice mixed with other ingredients in a closed pot, it smells havenly when I open my baby pot rice.
Baby-pot rice come in various choices. I love mine with eel and liver sausage (roughly HKD40 = USD 5) and you can always find one that you love.
