The vintage rice shop
“Eating Rice” is common for Hong Kong families given the new generations prefer other options.
Instead of “Enjoy your meal”, HongKongers say “Sick Fan”, meaning “let’s eat rice”. Rice is not just part of the meal but a key element that ties the family together, especially during dinner time.
People buy rice in supermarkets now days, but there are a selected few insisted that the old rice shop carry the best quality rice - probably from the soothing rice scent from barrels of rice.
Found an old rice shop in the “Sai Ying Poon” area and thought it would be interesting to share snapshots with you. They are very hard to find now since many have closed down with the increasing number of supermarkets in the city.
These large wooden barrels were done very skillfully - no leakage, no breakage, and they have been used for over 50 years!
Thousand years eggs were also available in this old rice shop. These eggs taste the best with with sweet ginger and they are one of the key ingredients in making congee.
